#0016 The Interview Part II

0016

This will be more funny when the character's personalities are more developed, but the joke of this is essentially also a clue to Emerson's general personality traits.

#0015 The Interview, Part I

0015

This is the first of seven cartoons in a storyline, producing the first story arc in this strip.

Note Anthony's tan and that this is the first outdoor scene to show the Sun and not to show clouds.

#0014 Hobson's Choice

0014

"Hobson's Choice" is an actual expression. Look it up.

Note that the agency's commitment to anti-discrimination is so strong that they not only ban you from identifying what traits you want in your date, they prevent you from identifying your own traits at all - after all, to suggest that your traits would be preferable to some people than another's - that would be discrimination!

This is likely to become a running gag.

By the way, the girl in this comic is Patience Lawson, first seen commenting on her sister Chastity's hairdo in comic #0004.

#0013 Gift Card

0013

Emerson is the most put-upon character, hence the dark circles under his eyes.

The sky is supposed to give the impression of rapidly approaching dusk.

#0012 Priorities

0012

There is a double meaning to Scott's statement:

He is saying: Anthony helps lighten the mood, which is why we keep him around as a friend.

I, on the other hand, keep him around to avoid becoming another Day by Day, Doonesbury, or Mallard Fillmore, as it would if they had completed their discussion.

#0011 Kenneth's Sexuality

0011

I have nothing against heavy women. I do, however, resent being told by anyone that they are entitled to people being attracted to them.

The girl is a one-shot character for now, but she might be brought back if I feel like it.

#0010 The Conspiracy

0010

Yes, that's the joke. Anthony thinks that Brigitte Nielsen and Grace Jones are the same person. Now you know why my cartoon has to be self-published. Although it's at least as funny as anything in Zippy the Pinhead.

By the by, Emerson Dexter was the first of the characters in this strip that I thought up, way back in 1993 when I was in eighth grade. My original storyline was a lot more dramatic than what Augustawell (only named such in the past few months) became in my head over the next few years.

#0009 The Color Line Within the Lines

0009

The black guy's name is Abraham Sherman. Although this strip suggests him to be fairly race-conscious, it will not be one of his major personality characteristics.
This strip is based upon my actual experiences using 8 colors to color humans in elementary school.
Notice how the time of day changes to evening at the end of the strip.

#0008 Tolerance

0008

This is based on recent Canadian "Human Rights" court decisions effecively punishing any criticism of homosexuality.

In case it is not obvious, Mikhail Lovjorski in the last panel is portrayed as having been beaten up. One element of his character is that he acts more "cartoony" than any other character, with more exagerrated expressions and an ability to survive almost anything.

#0007 Ken Quizzes Chastity

0007

The fellow with the sheep-dog haircut is Kenneth Hurstley. He will be seen with Anthony Trelawney in future strips as a sort of team-up. What you need to know about his character is mostly evident in this strip; he's a jerk, but he is also fairly harmless.
Every seventh strip will be in "Sunday" style.

#0006 Antique Technology

0006

The blonde character is Scott Lawdley, if it isn't obvious. The orange-haired fellow is Anthony Trelawney, one of the two sort of "butt-of-jokes" characters of the strip.

This comic is based on my real life. I recently bought a used Playstation 2 but use it only to play old arcade games and the Activision Anthology (I call it the Activision Atari 2600 Anthology here to specify the actual games involved and thus emphasize the joke).

#0005 Introducing Mikhail Lovjorski

0005

The idea for Mikhail's eyes actually came from Herge's Captain Haddock, who was one of very few Tintin characters to have "hollow eyes" instead of dots.

#0004 Introducing Chastity and Patience Lawson

0004

The introduction of Chastity and Patience Lawson, who will be recurring characters. Affectations such as the "Veronica Lake" hairstyle serve largely as ways of identifying different characters while using a drawing style that does not lend itself to distinguishing people from one another. One will notice that all of the women wear bright red lipstick - this will serve as the primary gender marker in the strip.

#0003 Religion Without Doctrines

0003

Another "Scott meets random person" strip. The punchline being the blank notebook, the "after punchline" comment doesn't seem as great on paper as it did in my head.

The goal here was to make fun of a specific type of person. Did I succeed? (If you have to ask "what kind of person?" the answer is "No").

#0002 No Labels

0002a

The orange-haired girl in this strip is not intended to be one of the recurring characters. She is essentially there to support the joke. She is some generic acquaintance of Scott's, and is asking him to come over as a friend. By the way, there is nothing kinky being proposed here.

The second version is the one printed above. I changed the third panel words to make the orange-haired girl's statement more clear. The original version is here.

#0001 Introducing Scott Lawdley

0001

This is going to be a political comic strip, but for the first few strips the main goal will be to introduce the cast. Scott Lawdley is the first character, and the first few strips will focus on him.
